文盲与无知（Illiteracy & Ignorance）

       让我们先来看看这两个词的词根及相关词汇。

      "gno/gni"是拉丁词根，"to know"的意思。You may recognize ("know again")some and be ignorant of ("not know")others.

      --- a chicken or an egg, which come into being first? The person who asked such a question may be an agnostic, someone who claims that whatever is divine cannot be known. (不可知论者）

      Cognitive (认知的）skills and knowledge involve the ability to acquire factual information, often the kind of knowledge that can easily be tested. Cognition(认知) is thus distinguished from social, emotional, and creative development and ability.

      diagnosis(诊断）， prognosis（预知）等等。

      "liter-"是拉丁词根，意思是"letter"（字母）。A literal (字面的） translation is not always the best. literate（会读写的、有知识的）可以简单理解为：脑瓜里有字母的。illiterate(文盲的）可以简单理解为：脑瓜里没有字母的。

       美国作家、舞蹈家、歌唱家、演员Maya  Angelou 在她的自传体作品I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings 中写道：“She said that I must always be intolerant of ignorance but understanding of illiteracy。”（她说我必须对无知不宽容，但是对文盲要表示理解。）

       文盲illiteracy是可以理解的，无知ignorance是不能宽容的。首先，文盲往往是由于缺乏受教育机会而导致的，而无知的原因经常是自身思想的狭隘，无知经常与自以为是相伴。比如，某些专家，在自己的领域里充满了偏见，而对其他却一无所知。历史上，美国人一度说英国人是色盲（color-blindness)，原因是在英国的Oxford等大学里对黑人没有歧视，英国人分不清黑和白。

       其次，文盲的直接结果是没有观点，而无知的直接结果是偏见。对于新生事物，文盲表示出好奇或者不关心，而无知的人往往会加以敌视。

      "An ignorant man is, by the very fact of his ignorance, a very dangerous person."  (by Van Loon Tolerance )  无知的人仅仅由于他对事物的一无所知便可以成为极其危险的人物。当无知的人群在某些无知的当权者煽动下向砍掉革命者头颅的行为喝彩，并吃革命者的人血馒头的时候，他们自以为干了一件光耀祖宗的事情。

       另外，无知是文明的扼杀者。无知的人喜欢别人指鹿为马，以掩盖自己的无知。战国时期，齐鲁是文明的中心，秦国文化落后，乃至统一之后，焚书坑儒，百家争鸣从此一去不再复返。

       对illiterate而言，最优秀的品质就是宽容。文盲一旦不宽容，就会滑向ignorant。因为，忠厚老实、心地善良的人在被幻觉所迷惑时，和野蛮粗鲁、嗜血成性的人是一样的。政治领域尤其如此，如果你是个“政治盲”，乘早离开政治远远的，除非你愿意在别人杀人时摇旗呐喊。政治的准则就是，只做自己，要么远离，要么冲到最前沿。
